The U11 Vikings played their first league fixture of the 2023 season at the Park on a chilly Bank Holiday afternoon. It is unlikely that the Higher will see a more gripping contest this year.
Winning the toss and inserting Offham proved to be a masterstroke by captain Freddie as the Vikings enjoyed the best of the conditions in the field. They certainly needed them as sickness in the squad had reduced the team to 7 (rather than 9) players. However, with high energy levels and concentration, the 7 were able to cover the ground with very few mishaps. They needed to be on top form as Offham, led by their stylish left hand opener Toby, compiled an impressive 69-3 off 16 overs. The bowling and fielding was tight and of particular note was Charlie's tidy work behind the sticks and Aayush's line and length. Jacob, George and Oscar each claimed a wicket and hopes were high as Park started their reply.
Offham had other ideas and three overs in Park were 11-5 thanks to a devastating display of seam bowling by Toby. William joined his captain Freddie as the last pair with 58 still needed. With a combination of patience and good shot selection they slowly built a partnership. Fine drizzle was also making conditions very difficult for the fielding side. Eventually, Park made it over the line with Freddie on 21*and William giving fine support on 8*.
A fantastic start to the season - well done boys!
